Where do auction machine tools come from?

Most auction machine tools come from business closures and insolvency, from firms upgrading to newer machines, and from workshop clearances and relocations. What should you check on a used CNC machine before bidding?

Check that the machine powers up and the control boots without alarms, that the spindle runs and the axes move, and that the ways, slides and spindle are not visibly worn. Confirm what tooling, chucks, collets and fixtures are included, and note the control type and its age. Machines are sold as seen, so ask for a power-on demonstration at the viewing; a machine that will not power up is a much bigger risk than one you have seen run.

Three-phase power: will the machine run in your workshop?

Most CNC and industrial machine tools need a 415-volt three-phase supply, not the single-phase supply of a small workshop or domestic unit. Before you bid, confirm the machine's supply and full-load rating and check your workshop can provide it, or budget for a three-phase supply or a phase converter. A machine you cannot power is a machine you cannot use, so this is a before-you-bid question, not an after.

Check the rating plate for voltage, phases and full-load current, and compare it with what your incoming supply and distribution board can deliver. Many small fabrication and toolroom machines run on single-phase, but machining centres, larger lathes and press brakes usually do not. Where three-phase is not available, a static or rotary phase converter can run some machines, but it must be sized correctly and is not right for every machine, so price it in and take advice before the sale rather than after you have won the lot.

How do you get the machine out? Rigging, removal and transport

Removal is the buyer's responsibility and, on a heavy machine, it is a real cost. The machine must be decommissioned and disconnected, rigged and lifted onto transport by people equipped for the weight, moved to your site, then set down, levelled and recommissioned. Plan and price this before you bid, because on a multi-tonne machine the removal can rival the buyer's premium, and you must clear the lot within the removal window.

  • Decommission. Safe electrical disconnection by a competent person, drain coolant and fluids, and secure moving parts for transport.
  • Rig and lift. A heavy machine needs proper lifting by forklift, crane or machinery movers, with the floor loading and access checked at both ends.
  • Transport. A suitable low-loader or flatbed, secured for the weight, with access to your site confirmed in advance.
  • Recommission. Set down, level, connect the supply, and test before you run production work.

How do you bid on a machine, step by step?

You register with the auctioneer, clear any identity check or refundable deposit, inspect the machine or read the condition report, then bid by leaving a maximum (proxy) bid or bidding live as the lot closes. If you win, you pay in full before collection, usually by bank transfer within a set number of working days, then arrange decommissioning and removal within the removal window.

  1. Register. Create an account, confirm your details and accept the sale terms.
  2. Inspect. View on the open day or study the catalogue and condition report, ask for a power-on demonstration, and check the rating plate for the supply the machine needs.
  3. Set your maximum bid. Enter the most you will pay, including rigging, transport and any recommissioning, and let the platform bid up to it.

What does a winning bid on a machine actually cost?

The hammer price is only part of it. A buyer's premium of roughly 15 to 20 percent is added, VAT applies to the premium and usually to the hammer price, and on a heavy machine you also pay for rigging, removal and transport. Most machine tools are VAT-qualifying, so a VAT-registered buyer can usually reclaim the VAT. Work out the all-in cost, including removal, before you set your maximum bid.

In the example above, an £8,000 hammer price on a CNC machining centre becomes roughly £11,540 all-in once a 15 percent buyer's premium, VAT on that premium, and rigging and transport are included. Removal is the swing factor: it is modest on a bench machine and substantial on a multi-tonne one. Bid on the delivered, installed cost, not the headline hammer price, and the saving over a dealer's recommissioned machine is where the value sits.

Can you buy machine tools at auction to export?

On an export lot the VAT is taken as a refundable deposit and returned once you provide valid evidence of export within the time limit in our terms; VAT on the buyer's premium is not refundable. UK machine tools with a known history and a working control travel well, and export demand puts overseas buyers on the same lots as domestic shops.   • Not confirming it powers up. A CNC machine that will not boot is a gamble. Get a power-on demonstration or read the condition report closely.

  • Underestimating removal. Rigging, transport and recommissioning are real money on a heavy machine. Price them into your maximum bid.
